ok this is what we are having issue with at the moment. we think the distributor is off a tooth or something like that. the reason we think this is because when we find TDC and you take the cap off the distributor the little rotating arm in there doesnt point to the #1 spark plug area. that is what my dad is explaining to me so sorry if it doesnt make any since. could this be the problem? the only reading we got today was like 40* so we thought that the gun was off. also the chalk we were using to mark the balancer would not show up for sh*t. what else could be used to do this? aluminum foil tightly packed?

get a wire brush(not a wire wheel) an clean off the rust or what ever is on the balancer. get white touchup paint and put some on. Wipe off the paint and leave what ever gets traped in the timing grooves. Did you guys remove the distributor or something previously? It's probably way off now cause you have been moving it around so much.

Save the aluminum foil for the aliens, remove the number 1 spark plug and stick your finger in the hole while you or someone else turns over the motor by hand. When you feel pressure trying to push your finger out of the hole stop and take a look at your balancer. It should almost be at zero according to the little pointer that says "time" on it. Line the pointer and the zero up and you are at tdc. While there, make a thin line of whiteout at zero and 10 btdc. Put the spark plug back in, start the car after you connect your timing light to the correct spark plug lead(#1) and to the battery terminals and route the wires away from anything spinning.
With the spout out, you should be able to see those marks quite clearly and see where your timing is and adjust accordingly. If you ask sears for a distributor wrench, I'm sure they can help you that is where I got mine years ago.

not only that.... but if idle problems still persist.... do an idle setting procedure... =the most ignored step...

The notch in the harmonic balancer is TDC correct? i pulled a plug and waited for air and the notch is 180* away from the indicator. Is this BTDC or TDC???
