My 87 at idle when I open the hood and look around I notice a ticking and it seems to shudder like its missfiring on 1 cylinder. Im thinking it may be an injector or valve train noise connected to a spark problem. The wires are aftermarket, and the cap looks new, but one day i was cleaning the engine bay and found a 9th spark plug wire laying among the others not connected to anything, so im guessing the previous owner was a compleate idiot... anyone have any advice for diagnosing my problem?

Take a look at the post stang in trouble above yours, almost same issue, but from the description it sounds like a mis-fire. How dd you determine Cylinder 1?

I haven't narrowed to a specific cylinder but it sounds like only one of them is missing because its a constant miss/shuddering

get a GOOD set of INSULATED pliers start car pull one wire off distributor cap if it makes a difference in the idle it is good put it back on contenueuntill you find a plug wire that makes no difference in idlewhen you pull it off that is the cylender you are haveing problems with look at that plug & wire & post on distributor cap
