I put 3:73s in my wifes 03. It gets better gas mileage for anything below 75mph. The 3:23 that came in her car was just way too high. As a general rule I think for small blocks the 3:73 is the best all round gear. For engines that exceed 400 cubic inches I like the 3:42. Like I said thats a general rule I use for Street cars. Every application is differant but just find some common ground for the street worthiness of the two ratios for daily drivers that will see some freeway use.

I've had both ,well actually 4 sets 2.73 3.55 3.73 and 4.10,and in my honest opinion the 3.73, which I have now, is as close to perfect as you can get..Now the new 08 mustang go with 4.10 becaues the tires are a lot taller.

Dang 2.73's you would had to slip the clutch a lot if you had to take off on a steep hill.

The whole better MPG thing around town is mainly becuase you can be at a lower speed in a higher gear turning less rpms... less rpms = less fuel consumption... then at highway speeds you will turn higher rpms to maintain that crusing speed and consume more gas...

With a lower gear it takes less to get the car moving so it is better around town but not for the interstate.

I was wondering if was automatic originally. I didn't think the 5 speed cars came with a 2.73.
