Default Starter problem

When i try to start my car, it turns over but it sounds like the starter is still trying to start the engine while the engine is on. And when i turn the engine off it continues to try and turn the engine over. Even after i take the keys out. The only way i have been able to get it to go away is drive for awhile, but this gets quite annoying and im sure is bad for my engine and starter. Do i need a new starter?

sounds like your starter solenoid is bad. there cheap and easy to fix. you could try tapping it with a hammer or something to see if that fixes it but if its constantly grinding i wouldnt even drive it till its fixxed. thats going to chew your flywheel all to hell.

Yeah, I had this happen to me a few times unfortunately.

I have found some bad wiring that I need to replace and a mechanic said I there was some arcing in another area.

yep just go to your local parts store and buy a starter solenoid. happened to me a while back and it sucks. They aren't very expensive and most parts stores will have them in stock.

It will eat the gear on the starter before it hurts the flywheel. I just had this same problem but it just randomly tried starting the car when I was driving 45mph down the road. Ate every tooth off the starter gear so I had to replace it and the selenoid.

From what I have figured out no matter what selenoid you end up getting it will end up failing some time or later. It is a stupid design IMO.

I got rid of that garbage by putting the new style starter on. Now the solenoid up top is just a nice junction.

starter is bolted to the bellhousing on the passanger side, can't miss it, two bolts hold it on
