Default Overheating and Frustrated!!!

Hey Guys,

I'll try to include everything that has been going on..

My ride is a 1992 5.0L GT with a Paxton Supercharger on it. This overheats all the time....corrective actions taken as follows...

New water pump, new thermostat(tried 180,190 and 195) and brand new HD radiator with a 16lb rad cap, a new Flex a Lite fan (3300cfm) ran a manual on/off swith(which I keep on anytime I drive it) I've also replaced the heater core, while I was doing all this I changed the cap, rotor, plugs, coil and battery. I've tried the air lock trick but that didnt help. This thing will stay cooler on the highway but if its hot when I hit the highway it wont come down all that much....in city gets cookin hot!! Stopped to let it cool a few times. The needle climbs up to the N in normal....thinking this is way too hot!! Both rad hoses heat up the way they should....only other mods are BBK headers and a dual exhaust system. I've also changed the fuel pump and filter from previous other problems. One thing that stuck out and I dont know why this is but the tubes going to the EGR spacer have been bypassed...it was like this when I bought the car and didnt think any thing of it...dont wanna hook it back up not knowing what gasket maybe leaking if I dont have a top end gasket kit.....

I think thats about it....please anybody got any ideas??? I do a lot of my own work to save money and I'm willing to try anything before I take it to a garage....hope to hear from ya!!!

it could be the gauge. also whats your timing set at and have you changed or messed with it lately. thats the only thing i could think of.

I have practically the same set-up in my 1990 (blower + the usual bolt-ons). Mine was overheating as well. I did everything you did & at the end of the day I had a head gasket that was leaking coolant into the exhaust. It ran fine until the coolant got low enough, then the guy would start heating up. Unfortunately there was no easy fix for me, I had to replace the head gaskets. It runs great now & cool. Just another opinion, good luck.

There is a tool that is sold (I bought mine at Nappa) at auto parts stores that pressurizes your cap/radiator & will also show you water/coolant leaks (under pressuer). The tool retails for about $130, so if you are not going to use it regularly, save the money & have a shop check it for you.

Good luck!

get one of thoes lasor thermometers and point it at the t-stat housing. remember water boils at 212F. Also remember that a cooling system is under pressure. for every 1PSI of pressure on the cooling system the boiling point is raised 3.25F. ALSO, if your running a 50/50 mix in your cooling system (water and green coolent) this will also increase the boiling point.

my bet is that it's the stat

you need a good one w/ a check ball in it... not a cheap one

use a 180*

It reach N and it's overheating?

Seriously you need to get a gauge with some numbers and report back.
