Default Power Loss and Smoke

So my car is smoking and lagging. I ran over a trash can lid and drug it around with my exhaust for a mile on some back-road recently. I thought maybe it was the plastic burning off. Its something else. But everything is brand new (mechanically) on this car. My friend said get rid of my chrome thermostat housing because the tend to leak. I've had real small leak for a while, but the car never smoked. My T5 has been leaking a little ATF here and there, but its been doing it for a while and never smoked.

I recently was underneath the car, and I noticed the one tranny-mount nut was missing and the other was loose - I got new bolts. I also found out the holes were stripped on the tailshaft housing. So I bought longer bolts and nuts to make everything nice and snug. Ever since then my car has been sputtering or making the same noise the car makes when it runs out of gas.

Is my clutch going? universal joints? engine problems?

thanks in advance guys.

Smoke from exhaust = engine burning coolant or oil internally
Smoke from engine bay = oil or coolant leak that's getting burned off probably on headers
Smoke from anywhere else = burning clutch/tires/brakes

Basically

I just installed an oil pressure gauge and it was leaking on the gauge-side... all over the inside of the car, tightened it up... not sure if the car will still smoke or not. I have a feeling the oil was falling out of the shifter hole down the side of the tranny and exhaust.

FYI - I meant it was smoking from underneath the car - exhaust and tranny
