you should be set if you put on a new smog pump.but make sure thats what it is first before you go buy a new one.

Sounds like popcorn kernels in your intake.

Like tohoopty said though, make sure it is definitely your smog pump before you buy it. Use the trick mattdel suggested, your neighbors might think you are crazy listening to a prybar but whatever works. The flexplate on my RS was shot and for a year I had to pop the hood and turn the crank pulley with a ratchet until it would start... everytime.
