Default I might be off by a tooth or two...

on my distributor. Reason being is that the car takes several tries to start before it catches, sometimes letting out a small intake backfire in the process. It'll start a little rough, but then It'll run fine once the idle settles, driveability isn't really affected after that. How can i check if im off a tooth? i think my timing is set at 14*

next time you go to start the car, cycle the key a few times before attempting to crank. see if it fires right up

and let us know

How long have you had the car? Have you always had this problem?

If this just started happening, you may have a timing chain that has jumped a tooth. Happens when they are worn out. Replacing the chain is the repair. Much fun project.

i primed the pump 5 times before turning it on. it caught the first time, but pretty weak. this may have something to do with other problems ive been having. does this sound like a weak pump to you all? FPG comes today, so i'll know for sure about the pressure when the car gets warmed up/hot.

how many miles are on the car? it might be time for a new chain, when you install the chain it wouldnt hurt to pull the distributor too to check its gear... just get #1 cylinder at TDC the stab the dizz so the rotor lands on the #1 plug wire, once you start it adjust the timing...

but it may be a fuel pressure issue also, if the reg is not new, change it, you have to pull the upper intake for that, otherwise its a pain

the car is well in its 200k range. The issue, however, started after i changed the stator in the distributor. So i could have very well put it back in wrong, but not wrong enough to make the car fail. I had marked everything and when i put it back i thought it was correct.

I have the FPG here with me, but im scrounging around to find the necessary fittings. the autoparts store has it on special order only, so it'll be a day or two before i can check the fuel pressure.
