Fuel pump problem...need help!
I moved out to Texas about 5 months ago...car was running great. I hauled my mustang here. When we arrived I started it, took it off the dolly and drove it into the driveway. About two months later I started it to keep it lubed up. Now about two months after that, I went out to start it an the battery was dead. I hooked it up to my explorer to charge the battery and it just keeps turning over, but won't start.
I noticed the fuel pressure gauge in the engine bay reads zero...and also noticed I don't hear the fuel pump turn on when I turn the key. So I ordered and installed a new fuel pump. Still won't start, no fuel pressure and I don't hear the pump turn on.
While hooked up to the explorer, I tested the voltage at the started solenoid and got a reading of 12.65. Next with key on, engine off, I tested the voltage to the two wires leading to the pump and got 0 volts for both. I toggled the fuel shut off in the trunk to see if that did anything and still nothing. I am stumped...any thoughts? I'm out of ideas and you guys usually think of stuff I don't.
Thanks.

Okay, decided to do a continuity test although I forgot to unhook the battery. I ran a cable from the red wire at the pump to the positive battery cable. The pump kicked on. So if the pump is fine and there's juice at the starter solenoid, I guess I have a break somewhere in between? Anyone know which cable at the solenoid powers the pump? Am I going down the wrong trail...any thoughts???
Thanks.
Thanks.

This morning I tested the two cables leading to the fuel pump for continuity with the both battery cables unhooked. There was continuity from the red fuel pump cable to both battery cables and both sides of the starter solenoid. There was also continuity from the black fuel pump cable to both battery cables and both sides of the starter solenoid, as well as the frame of the car. Is this right? I don't know too much about the cars electrical system. I thought maybe the starter solenoid was bad, but if that was the case, the starter wouldn't be turning when I crank the key. I'm more confused now...any thoughts?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Did some more research and found a good discussion on how to diagnose the problem. See link below:

Turns out I'm getting 12 volts at the relay...jumped the orange and pink wires and bingo. the pump kicked on. Now going to order a new relay...forgot about those little buggers.
Thanks guys!

well you new your fuel pump obviously wasn't the problem, even though you probably didn't need to buy a brand new one, but at least you figured out what was wrong! I'd say good diagnosis bud! I would've have checked all the fuses before buying the new pump though if I were in the same situation.
