Default MSD vs. Upgrading Stock Distributor

Would it be worth it to upgrade the stock distributor with a upgraded TFI module and gear or just buy an MSD? Either way I plan to get an ignition box, and all I need is a setup adequate for 400-500hp.

The reason why I am considering upgrading the stock distributor is because I just installed a Trick Flow intake, and now my a/c line is blocking my Steeda strut tower brace. I called Maximum Motorsports and they said their brace will not clear an MSD distributor. Thoughts?

Interesting, did you at least have an ignition box or anything like that? I don't see any real reason to upgrade my ignition now (once I do heads maybe), so I'm just planning for the future.

I don't think you'll need a fancy ignition system just for heads. The only reason I went with a MSD setup was it worked well with the timing retard switch I used with the nitrous.

The Ford distributor will work fine for you. The ignition boxes can add some options, including multiple spark and staged timing retard, and can add a little juice to the spark. I still run the Ford distributor on my89. When I added a Crane Hi 6 ignition box some time back, the only difference I noted was a slightly smoother idle. I recently added an MSD ignition box to my 67 Cougar just to retard the timing during starting.

That's good to hear. So when is it a good idea to upgrade the TFI module or add an ignition box?

Nope, all stock but I will be putting a MSD box on it as I am looking to step up the performance again and I think it will help me some.
