Default 89 GT T-5 issues

I just bought an 89 GT 5.0 with a T-5 5 speed, and recently it started to develop a whining noise when in gear, it stops when the clutch is pushed in. It also grinds going into 3rd unless I take considerable time shifting into it, and will sometimes pop out of 2nd. It has a Hurst Tri-Ax short throw, and I dont think it has an adjustable clutch cable. It shifts into the other gears no problem, and I personally filled the transmission with 5.5 quarts of ATF.

could that be whats causing those issues? I read up more and the whining noise usually is an indicator of fluid being too low, also, wouldnt i have an issue with all the bgears and not just 3rd?

If its poping out of 2nd then a shift fork is probably broke or bent and your 3rd gear sincro is going bad too.

Try checking the shift stops on shifter for second. Not it then clutch cleeve, blocking ring possible gear.Third sounds like clutch sleeve , blocking ring, possible gear.

So I'm looking at a rebuild either way. I was told when I bought it that the trans was brand new, so I guess the s.o.b. lied through his teeth to me, which is to kinda be expected I guess. He also tried to tell me that the motor was a crate 306 which it very clearly isn't, and couldnt produce any receipts. Either way I traded a junk motorcycle for it and it runs fine otherwise and the paint and interior is flawless. So what kind of money am I looking to spend if I rebuild it myself and how difficult is it?

If you can pull it yourself, take it to a reputable local transmission shop for a bench rebuild. I had a Jeep transmission and transfer case both done for $750 which included kits for both. Then you know it is gone over by somebody who knows what he is looking for problem-wise.

I'd rather go into it myself, I'm a wheel vehicle mechanic in the army so I have a full complement of whatever tools I may possibly need, plus being in a military town there are a lot of predatory businesses around, I just don't trust any of the local shops. Any suggestions on which rebuild kit I should go with?
