I have an 89 gt. Sometimes it will run but it backfires through exhaust and everynow and then throough the throttle body. And then sometimes it will not run at all. Ill try to crank it but it turns over and sounds like it wants to start but then it doesnt. If i spray starting fluid into the intake it will start but once all the starting fluid burns it will die. When i let it sit for a few hours it will run again. Tested the fuel pressure and it had 26 psig while it was running. Going home on leave in a couple weeks trying to have it running right by then. Any help would be greatly appreciated. THanks.

I think your fuel pressure at idle should be at least 35 psi with stock engine. Id check the fuel filter first off then go from there.

I thought about the fuel filter, but would that cause the intermittent problems of not starting?

yea it could . Id start there they are pretty cheap to buy. If changing the filter dont give you better fuel pressure it might be time to think about a new pump. These pumps dont just stop working they get weak with age.
