Default Base Pan gasket replacement

Hey guys, was wondering how much work it would take to replace the base pan gasket on a 1988 5.0l engine. Someone mentioned to me that the engine has to come out, is this true?

If you mean the oil pan then yes, pretty much. The engine has to be lifted quite high to get it past the k-member and its still a pain to do.

Yep engine has to come up pretty high . And while you got it there may as well put a new oil pump in it. Nothing like doin somthing twice.

I've did it in my 95. It's a giant pain in the ***! You have to unbolt the rack & pinion, uncouple the steering shaft, Remove motor mount nuts & jack up the motor just to clear the K-member. I'd just pay the $400 bucks if I ever have to do it again.

Ehh, I'd rather spend a few hours of my time for FREE than spend $400. I had to unbolt the engine mounts, tranny mount, and then put my engine lift on and raise the whole drivetrain(engine and transmission) up. I also removed the driveshaft.

My oil pan drain plug was stripped and I didn't know it until I went to change the oil for the first time.

It's not hard if you know what you are doing.
