5.0L (1979-1995) Mustang Technical discussions on 5.0 Liter Mustangs within. This does not include the 5.0 from the 2011 Mustang GT. That information is in the 2005-1011 section.

Here you go. Video quality might be a little grainy but I can watch it on my phone pretty easily. They're Spintech Pro-Streets with a BBK off road x pipe. I have little to no drone, and I regularly cruise around here between 40-55mph in 4th, which puts it somewhere around the 2k rpm "drone zone".

Don't mind the smoke. It's seafoam

Here in the 'burbs there are not the places to stretch its legs like in Wisconsin or southern Illinois where I lived when I had my '87.
I think for your purposes 3:55's would be perfect. When I had the AOD in my car, with a 2800 stall, I would of liked a little steeper gear at the track. But for daily driver duties they'll be perfect. Especially since your daughters going to be driving it soon. Going from your stock gearing to those will make a big enough difference to keep a smile on your face.

Yes, when I ran the Crane 2031, it was with the 1.7 Crane (Cobra) roller rockers. I put the 1.7 rockers on the car with the factory cam originally, and they stayed with the Crane 2031 cam. I ran that cam with the TF TW heads and 1.7 rockers (and factory block/pistons) for about 150K miles.

Duncan GT, thanks for the vid, I love the sound of the Spintechs! I know I sound nuts, but it almost sounds like a snarl or lion's roar. (My 14 year old was impressed) Here I was, the guy thinking "I'm okay with the factory mufflers"....if they don't drone, that may seal the deal. I like Flowmasters (actually, there aren't many exhausts that sound bad with the 5.0 pushing air) , but am reading too much about drone there. The Spintechs seem reasonably priced, which I guess makes up for their homemade look.

88orangepeel, Roger M I have a feeling the I'll decide on a gear ratio in that millisecond before I hit the return key when I order, and then I'll second guess myself for a while. As I said, my instinct based on little more than intuition and looking at RPM/vehicle speed with the AOD ratios told me 3.55; the 3.73 fans are just so heartfelt in recommending the 3.73 that I am still debating.

reldla1966, I had really convinced myself to forgo the GT40X or others, even if I could get them for 800-900 complete in favor of the Twisted Wedge. I saw you now run AFRs, and the writeup on FordMuscle.com really makes them sound like a serious competitor for my dough. Having had both, why did you go for those over the TW? Your experience with the Crane/TW sounds very impressive. BTW, which cc size were the TW you had?

The TF TW were the originals, 170cc. A couple years ago I went from a 306 to a 369 ci engine. That dictated changing virtually everything on the engine (I kept the Holley intake, but that was about it...). While I was researching head options, I stumbled upon 3" center to center exhaust manifold (header) bolts on some cylinder heads versus the factory 2" center to center spacing typical on most small block Ford heads. The 3" spacing allowed the elimination of the pinch welds on typical small block headers. So I went with AFR's to get the 3" exhaust bolt spacing, and as I compared the various choices, they flowed as well as anyone. For the factory 2" spacing, I think the TF may be slightly better choice because the TF exhaust port is slightly more rectangular compared to the AFR which are slightly more square-ish, but AFR and Edelbrock among others are also excellent choices.

Haha, yes they sound awesome in my opinion. It has a nice growl at 2k rpm, and I dont have to shout if I have a passenger. Those are pro-streets, they have a sportsman series also. Flownaster is an original, but they have a lot more drone than I'd like. A guy in high school had them on his 4.6
