Help! Battery light on and batery discharging while running!
Hi all!
The battery dummy light on my 95 GT keeps coming on and off intermittently.
Occasionally when it happens I'll lose power to just about everything in the interior.
What I've done: I started by replacing the negative terminal (which were damaged), and the alternator which tested bad and alternator harness, and charging the battery (which is putting out 16v on my tester).
With new alternator, charged battery, and new terminal the light is still coming on. I know there can be issues with the ignition tumbler that can result in losing power to the interior, but could this also be an issue with the generator/regulator? Or maybe something else I'm missing completely?
ATM the car starts right up and will run fine, all the interior appointments are getting power etc, but the battery light is still on.
Thanks!
Bob

have the battery tested for a bad cell. Thats beyond the scope of your equipment, test at autozone free.Thats like touching the positive and negative cables together intermittently ,causing the dummy light to come on

really should have the battery load tested, 16v is with the car running I assume?
The alternator should not put out more than 15v, if it does its because its tyring to carry the load that the battery should be doing.
battery could have a dead cell or an internal short.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the help.
I had the guys at advance test the battery and they said it passed. They also said that it "probably doesn't have a bad cell, but their test won't tell directly tell them if it has a bad cell, it will just read 'replace' ".
I got the reading of 16v with the car off, because I don't want to run the battery if I don't have to, but I will try with the car running.
Can I swap another battery in (from a Pathfinder) and if the battery light doesn't come on, then I know it's the battery?
Thanks!

what kind of tester are you using at home to come up with 16v on that battery?
A fully charged battery with the car off should only read 12v +/- .2 or so. And with the car running between 14-15v.
As long as the battery in the path finder has the same type of posts , and the cables will reach them you can use it. I know some batteries are too tall and you cant close the hood, but just to test the theory it would work.

also check for blown fuses since your harness got fried, check for bad battery cables, and this may sound weird, your new alternator can also be bad, you should always have them test a new alternator b4 you buy it.
