Default Heads, cams, and timing

Hey guys, I meet another foxbody guy at a Dunkin Doughnuts and we started to swap notes on our rides. I noticed he had a GT40P intake, Edelbrock heads, and claims to to have a Ford Racing E or B cam. But then again, he said he bought the car with the mods on it, and didn't know fully for sure I suppose. The rest was pretty much stock. I saw that his distributor was in the 6 o'clock position when mine is at the 4 o'clock.

I asked him about the gas mileage and timing with the heads, and he said that if he babies it he will get 14 mpg (but usually it's 9 mpg). He also said his timing was at either 30 or 38 degrees, which I find that very strange. According to him, if he puts it at 10 or 12 degrees the car will not run or start. I've gotten to the point where if I don't know about something or I think somebody does not know what they are talking about, I just nod and keep quite. I'm not saying he is full of it or anything, I just don't know see how that set up would require that much advancement on timing, but then again I'm still running stock heads and cam (for the moment). Thoughts?

10 or 12 is just base with spout out.......if it won't run at such, either his balancer is off or he is reading the wrong set of numbers to try and set timing on the balancer....total can be upwards of 40 with the way the schalar tables are set up in the eec iv......can't remember what the max is without looking it up but it's around there.

Interesting. I know that cams can change timing, but I didn't think it would be that much. Especially if it IS a Ford Racing B or E cam. I was kind of scratching my head telling him maybe his timing is too advanced which is why he is getting such low gas mileage, but I'm not sure. I have every upgrade you can have up until heads and cams, and I'm getting an average of 17-21 depending on driving conditions. Both of us have the T5 by the way. He also mentioned he has the 3.73 gears while I have the 3.08's. I know the 3.08's are supposed to be the best for fuel mileage, but still.... 9 mpg's?

Something's wrong with his car, if it's getting that bad of gas mileage with those mods listed.

Like I said, I find it strange that his mpg's would be so low for the mods listed. He only had 24 pound injectors to.

My plan is to upgrade my fuel pump and rebuild my tank, put an adjustable fuel pressure regulator in, and then prepare for heads.

My goal is AFR or Trick Flow heads to match up with my Trick Flow intake (and every other mod I have), but if I'm going to go down to 9-14 mpg average... perhaps it's not worth it.

A well built / set up motor should get around the same mileage your getting now. It's not like the old days where a intake/cam swap dropped your mpg in half. With my set up I've gotten a best of 28 on strictly highway, checked with GPS, not the speedo, which mine is a little off.

Of course, the driver's right foot plays the biggest role in efficiency.

Right, that's what I thought based on our last conversation on fuel mileage. I thought something was off from the moment I saw his car because the first thing he said to me was "nice car man!... it's really quite!!" I've NEVER heard anybody tell me that my car was quite before. I have long tube headers, off road h-pipes, and Flow Masters cat back exhaust. His was at least twice as loud as mine. Probably because of the timing being so high. I know when I set mine to 12 degrees my car got quieter, and when I put it to 15 degrees it was louder.

Lol maybe he is running with out his spout and has the base timing at 30. I would think that it wouldn't crank but who knows.

Haha, yeah that's exactly what I would think, but the TFI module is almost directly aligned with the Ford badge on the front bumper.
