Default flattening a flat tappet mech cam?

Hello guys,

I got a question for anyone with mechanical flat tappet cam knowledge. I have a 393 Stroker (This is a general question, not engine related) I have the Edelbrock Performer RPM top end kit on my motor which is very under rated for the power my motor can produce. I have finally saved up enough money to upgrade my heads from the eddy rpm's to the victor JR heads. My plan is to keep using my current cam which is the performer rpm cam which pulls to about 6800rpm in my motor. I was going to get the victor JR heads (77189 for a flat tappet mechanical cam design). I called edelbrock and the guy told me the springs in the victor jr heads would flatten a mechanical roller camshaft. I don't understand though how a head on there website designed for a mechanical roller camshaft would flatten that camshaft overtime. Anyone have some input on this?

I dont know how it would do that. I would think if anything were to happen the push rods would bend first. It might wear it down more over time such as a 100k miles or so vs a hydraulic roller but if your running a mechanical roller youll be servicing the valve train around that time frame anyway if not rebuilding it.

get rid of the cam,you need the springs on the heads to match the cam requirements, roller cams use higher spring pressures........contact ed at fti and do it right once only..........www.flowtechinduction.com

Yea I know flat tappet is kind of a thing of the past. I havnt made the purchase a new cam is a good idea. I am just trying to understand this. My current head has a seat pressure of 125lbs and the edelbrock victor Jr's for flat tappet are 140lbs. I have a hard time believing that a 15lb different would flatten a cam.

that's closed seat pressure......the open is what you should compare....also with flat tappet, be sure to add a zinc additive.
