not sure if the window motors in the Mustangs work the same way, but the ones for my Bronco have plastic bushings in the gearbox. the bushings get old, they crumble and boom....the windows quit working. replacement bushings are in the HELP! section at Autozone, Advance, etc.....$7 per kit to fix one motor. the motors themselves rarely go bad.

sorry not to hijack your thread, my windows are slow to go up and down. especially up, i assumed it was a motor issue? could it be the bushings? thanks mike

if the motor is tapped on and it starts working again , it is not a plastic bushing issue, what is going on is the contacts in the motor and or brushes are worn/dirty, replace the motor , they are not to expensive.

either way, the motor has to come out. when you pull it, try it to see if it turns at all. if not, the motor is shot. if it turns without the load of the regulator, I still say bushings are bad.

One trick on the bushing is to use 6 5/16"-18 nuts instead of the bushings. This way they will not fail again in the future. Just dont get your fingers caught in the glass because then there is absolutely no give. Granted there is not much in the bushings.

DON'T use nuts in place of the bushings. The bushings are designed to give a little when the window closes on something or tops out. The nuts won't give, so the gears in the gearbox WILL.....then you're back to buying a $50+ window motor.
