Default 1987 5.0L aftermarket heads, or better OEM?

I have a 1987 5.0 motor which I believe to be a HO. The head code is E7TE, which from what I have read is the 87 truck engine heads and that years HO heads.. I also lean towards it being an HO because it has the 351 firing order as well. It also has an AOD behind it.

The only reason I question anything is because its in a 1967 Cougar that was pieced together by the last guy :P lol.

I was wondering, if I could find some GT40 heads, would they be a direct swap in for my hydraulic roller motor?

I already have a Holley 4 barrel carb (sorry don't know the size, how can I check?), edelbrock performer RPM intake, hood scoop to feed cool air, long tube headers, and 2.5" exhaust back to the rear end where it dumps off some cherry bombs.

true GT40 heads will be a direct swap. I should caution you though, GT40P heads may cause some serious issues if you try to run them. Specifically with the ecxhaust you have in the car now.

Use the regular GT-40's NOT the GT40P's

Guys thank-you. What years of Explorer did these heads come on? Also, will I be able to just use my original pushrods and everything?

1995 and 1996, some 1997s.

gt40 = 3 bars
gt40p = 4 bars

Not completely sure on the pushrods. I switched cam when I did mine, so I had to use different ones.

For a bit more money I'd second the aftermarket. Look for some used ones. There are a whole mess of brands out there.

the 3 bar V 4 bar for ID is best. very easy to spot

i like gt40 heads, you can pick them up for $200 to $300

ive even seen them for $350 with 1.7 cranes on them already

do a little porting on the exhaust and a nice valve job, well spent money

Thanks for the replies guys, good info.

The only reason I was not considering the aftermarket route was for price. I don't need the heads, so Id only pick up the GT40 heads if I found some that the person didn't know what they had type thing.. and get them cheap.

Now when you say 3 bars versus 4 bars.. what does this mean.

Budget is always the big factor. For the money the Gt40 heads are a nice little performance boost over stock. The bars are on the end of the head. So if your budget is tight this the way I'd go.
