Tell him matching numbers means the vin is on the engine which ford didn't do tell 68.On the earlier years its casting code which just means the parts are older then the cars build date.A little googling can give you guides how to decode all that.

Like Andrew said you can't tell numbers matching on your 65. Ford didn't realize the future value of the documentation of what engine and trans go with each car and burned the records for the 64-66's. 67 is the first year that you can get a Marti report that will give you a detailed description of what came with your car.

The most you can get for your 65 is check out the date code on your block, trans, rear, fenders and most any other part of your car and hope that date code is earlier than your final build date for your car. The 64-66 were mass produced and what parts went into the car that could. So your engine could of been made 2 months before and your trans 4 months before. But there is no way to definitlively say that your car is numbers matching.

You have a 66 engine code, and a 68 water pump code. The only numbers you can match are the casting date codes on 64-67, if they are 1-8 weeks before the car build they might be original. The one exception is the K code, which had a partial VIN on the right front corner:

If your door tag is still there decode it here http://www.mustangdecoder.com/plates_1965.html then you go from there and start matching stuff up.
