1st engine rebuild
Hello guys I'm new to the forum and quite excited to be a member of the forums. I just pulled a 92-93 351w block from a e-series van in a junkyard. I'm doing a motor swap to replace my bone stock 302. I've done plenty of research and so far this is what my setup is looking like, engine rebuild kit through summit racing, debating on Vic jr heads or 351d0e heads(ported), lunati voodoo cam kit, and I'm not really sure on which intake to go with. My motor is a roller block, daily driver/strip set up so I'll nead low compression(I guess). I'm still deciding on throwing my Novi 1220 back on the new motor. Anyway I really need some help here, and I'm on a budget build. I'm just several months away from getting out of the Marines so Semper Fi to all you veterans, I'll be driving a total of 2 hrs a day for school so drivability is reaaaally important for me here.

That sounds really cool. I've been reading and watching all sorts of stuff about engine rebuilds, I'd love to buy one from a junkyard and rebuild it as a learning experience.
Anyway, I know PA is pretty big, but if you ever need an extra pair of hands, maybe I could come down on a weekend to help out.
Thanks for your service, by the way.

Trickflow or AFR heads are the best used combos out there and if you're going FI, 205cc intake runners will be the minimum for adequate flow IMO.
Use a Vic jr. single plane intake for peak hp or the trusted RPM Air Gap if you want more torque.
What performance levels are you looking for? Because you got to have a plan before building your mill...

I'm not looking for anything crazy for now im just trying to get it done right the first time my main goal is to get her running, but I would like to see 400-500 hp. What pistons do you recommend? Most common I've seen are 64cc with flat top to get a 10:1 ratio. I don't mind running her on 93 octane. Also which afr heads? Aren't the 165's for 302's? Thx for the input btw.

I'm at a no brainer right now fellas. I'm having a hard time deciding on which heads to go for right now. First of all I decided my engine is going to be N/A, and it's going to be a street motor. I really don't want anything above 400hp for the sake of drivability/durability. What info Am I missing for you to help me? What cylinder head will be good for this setup.

Don't waste your time with the 351 heads, if you've already got aftermarket heads in your plans and budget, do that and don't skimp on the 351 ported heads. Trick flow and AFR are both great choices, although you could start a 100 page thread pitting the loyalists against each other.
How much $$ are you realistically looking into putting into this project? That will determine how much hp you can make.

I've got around 3.5k to play with for now. I'm really thinking about calling tfs to see if they can give me a packaged deal(top end kit with their tfs 170 heads). If I were to go that route, what cams should I be playing with?

Tom over at Dssracing is putting together a tfs 360 top end kit with custom comp cams. So far its looking pretty good. I know the intake will have to be swapped due to the 351w block and I'll be porting them. Fellow members, do you guys agree?
