Well it's been a long two weeks. Pulled the gears on the mustang trying to get rid of the whine and I had some weird vibrations going on that didn't 100% go away with the stock driveshaft. So amidst this I found that the backlash was set to .015-.017 (range is .008-.015). Set it at .011 and put it all back together. Whine got quieter but the vibration issues were still there. So canceled on MW and took it all the way apart and installed a new set of 3.73's and invented some swear words. Found the preload on the pinion bearings was at 35in lbs (16-29). Thought that might be the problem. Nope. Reinstalled everything, 28in lbs preload(that was close!) and .011 backlash, all new bearings and put the 1 piece ds back in. The whine is gone. But the rumbling/vibrations are still there. So I'll be flipping the ds 180, check it and hope for the best. If not I'll have to go see about getting it rebalanced. Just for kicks, here's the setup I ended up using to get the crush washer. Vise grip ratchet cheater, chain fall and a piece of scrap steel bolted.to the flange.
Jessie's jeep has death wobble, but I found the toe was way out of spec so hopefully that fixes it. Then onto the other jeep. I've been driving it for 2 weeks with a busted transmission and the rebuild kit in my living room so that's hopefully gonna be under the knife for this week.
