Hey guys - I know that many have done the T5 retrofit for a 70 Mach 1. However - has anyone out there tried fitting either the Pro-5.0 or the Steeda Tri-Ax shifter in the '70 Mach 1 that has the center console? Neither manufacturer will tell me if it will fit (with out cutting the console - No! No! No!). Someone out there must have tried this by now ... I'd think. Can anyone help me? - Gary -

Hey Gary,

Can't help you specifically with your '70, but I am using a Steed Tri-Ax shifter in my '65 with a stock replacement style shift handle and it works perfect. It has been years since I've had a stock shifter and a toploader, but I think the handle position is more or less similar. My guess is that it will probably fit since it is a pretty short throw shifter.

Below is pic. The shifter, albeit a bit obscured, looks a bit odd as it is parked and in first gear.

Thanks for your reply! You have a most beautiful restoration! I'm jealous. I’m probably going to buy the Tri-Ax and I’m just hoping that it centers fairly well on the tunnel. There isn’t much left or right room within a ’70 Mach 1 console opening for the square base and I refuse to cut the console (a $400 piece of plastic replication!).

I would use something like this http://www.reenmachine.com/shop/prod...1&cat=0&page=1 most the short throw shifters in a old mustang are fun if you got short arms.
