Default driver side door lock won't work on 66 coupe

i have a 66 mustang coupe and when i put the key in the door cylinder to unlock or lock the door it doesn't work and i was wondering if i could take off the interior door panel and get to the door lock cylinder and if so what could be wrong? did something unhook? thanks for all replies

Yes, you can take the door panel off and get at it, however it isn't the easiest thing to see. it's more of a touch and feel situation. Those locks have a lock rod inside the door, and in most cases the clip breaks off and when this happens, the rod pops out of the lock arm and the key no longer works. I would say this is most likely the problem. The new clips are easy to find at most parts vendors and only cost about 2 bucks(maximum).
