RE: i-6 to v8 switch
I did it! My first Mustang was a 6 cyl '66. The springs and all will work....I just pulled the motor out...moved the mount brackets to a different set of bolt holes and dropped the v8 in.
I had to baby it a while because i was putting miles on a new motor. Then after driving it for about 6 months I was offered about twice what i had in it...So it got sold. And the current owner still drives it daily....No probs!
you will see the 2 mounting arms coming away from the shock towers...there should be 3 bolt holes on each shock tower. Two will hold the mount as it is now...But if you were to unbolt them and use the unused bolt hole (higher i believe) it will put the mounts at the angle to drop in a v8.
I thought the springs gave it a "raked" look, so i left it...the three speed was left in place along with everything else.
I hope that helps some.....If not...i'll try to either dig up some photos or draw a diagram to help clarify things.
Enjoy your new ride!

Along with the motor swap, it is a good idea to go to a 5 lug front spindle, as well as disc brakes to help handle the extra weight and horsepower. If you cant find a Mustang spindle set, I believe a Ford Granada set up is pretty much a bolt in solution.

RE: i-6 to v8 switch
I have a '67 coupe that had an i-6. I just retired the i-6 and dropped in a 351w. I put new springs in so that the car would sit even. I also replaced the front drums with 5-lug disc brakes. I have a 3-speed manual which could handle the torque but I put in an 8 inch rear-end just to be safe. Next on the agenda is to put in a slip-diff.

RE: i-6 to v8 switch
Hey i did this in my fathers 65 ford falcon convertible, but ran into some problems with it later on. At first the conversion went fine, but when we put larger tires on the back of the car to keep the tires from spinning, we blew out the 7 inch axle. After about 8,000 miles, the front brakes were shot, as the old 4 lug setup had smaller rotors, which required much more force to stop the car from the added weight of the v-8. Not long after that, the ball joints and bushing went out, again due to the weight of the v-8. We finally just went with all new v-8 parts, and haven't had any problems for about 20,000 miles now. If you can go with v-8 suspension parts, it will definetly be worth it from the beginning.
