Default timing question

i have a 302 with 289 heads will the change what my timing should be set at because i set it to what it should be and the engines dies thank you for your help

I don't think so. Do you have your timing set at around 6 degrees BTDC? Also, check your points gap for right at 0.017. And, the dwell angle should be about 29. Pull one of the spark plugs to see if it is gapped at about 0.034. Now, with these initial settings, and the engine still dies, start working with the fuel system. Check the fuel filters and see if they are plugged. Is the fuel pump working properly? When you look down into the carb, and you manually give it gas, do you see gas squirting into the venturi? Screw your idle adjustment screws in all the way, then bring them back out about 2 to 2 1/2 turns. I could go on and on, but first try these to see if she runs better, then report back with what you have found.
