Collision causing damage to uni-body
I have been looking for a Mustang I could restore for quite a while now. I found one, its a 67 coupe 289 automatic. Its been in what look to be some slight "fender benders", but I was worried something might not be right. I searched the forum, but didnt find anything that really pertained to my problem exactly.
In the trunk, there is no liner/carpet, so you can see the bare metal. Just below where the trunk lid pivot point is, the metal has some spots where it almost looked like it was forced upward. The guy says that collisions usaully dont cause this to happen, but i dont see any other explanation. Its not bad, maybe a 1/5 of an inch max. Is this a problem? Can I get by and hammer it down and not worry about it?
The second problem, it has also had a more noticable frontal impact. The hood is bent up completely, the bumper is bent in, and the fender is messed up. The radiator support will probably need to be replaced also. It doesnt look bad, but im not sure what can be done besides fix the noticable damage. I am including a picture of the front of the car, unfortunately I dont have one of the trunk area.
The main question is, from the sounds of these problems, are they minor, and what needs to be done to fix the problem? Should I walk away from this car? The great thing about it, not to much rust damage at all. Everything seems to be in great condition. Any help with this would be appreciated. Thanks.

RE: Collision causing damage to uni-body
I have a 1965 coupe that I wrecked the front RH. I had to replace the fender apron, radiator support and fender. While none of it was cheap or easy......I do have a little advice. IF you buy it and repair it, go with the parts made in USA. The repo parts I got were really flimsy and poorly made. I will replace them all ASAP. Also, if you can, buy the body bolt set for $100 or so. No matter how you think you'll save all the bolts you take off, they run away.
AND... You may think you are just going to replace those parts, BUT.... Once you get them off, you will find a million other things. Splash guards, valances, bumper struts, etc. The list is almost endless.
One more piece of advice, you gotta love the car, or it will send you over the edge!!!! I am just now coming back from the abyss.
And good luck with the spot welds if you do repair it yourself, there are a million of them. I learned alot about myself and the car by the time I was finished. Mostly, I make a lousy body tech.

RE: Collision causing damage to uni-body
I am lucky. My old man knows someone with a frame machine. But you'd be suprised where it is.... A tow yard/junk yard. Kinda makes sense, they lein sale some of those cars, gotta see if they are straight. I'll ask him what he usually charges, but if I were you, that would be something to keep in mind. Instead of a body shop, maybe a place like that would be cheaper. I'll let you know.
