Default Oil Pressure

Hey everyone, I'm going to be restoring a 1970 Mustang Fastback, and the car has low oil pressure. Now I was just wondering, what may be wrong that I have to fix, and if yous know prices? Thanks alot.

it could be a few things..first I would buy a mech oil gauge just to be sure..if still low then buy a new oil pump, pickup and harden steel shaft. before putting in the pump running some "bg products moa" engine cleaner in the engine... then do the oil pump change also do not be cheap on the oil pan gasket as it will save you time of replacing it later from oil leaks

Check oil pressure with a gauge like vfast said, then if its really low then put on a high volume pump with a new shaft. If its still low then time for a rebuild. Its either low because your oil pumps crapping on you, or your engine bearing clearances are opened up.

To add to this, Keep in mind that oil pumps do not create oil pressure, they simply pump oil thru the passages. The clearance between these passages is what really creates oil pressure. Therefore, if your rod bearing or main bearing clearances have worn / opened up even just a little, your pressure can drop quite a bit. If there is a restriction at your oil pump screen , not allowing oil to flow, that also could be the cause of a drop in pressure. Also, when hot at operating temp, your oil pressure will drop when the engine is at an idle, this is normal as long is it doenst drop to zero pressure! As stated earlier, get a mechanical gauge and see where you are at before going further.
