Default 351C Gurus Please Help=(

ok so its a 351C 2V, holley 2bbl carb, stock distributor with pertonix conversion. So I was in the process of retiming my engine and when I went to crank it...BOOM. Bye bye driver side muffler. How did this happen? Am I 180 degrees off? Anyone that can tell me a step by step process on retiming this thing will be greatly appreciated. Ive been bring the #1 cylinder to TDC via looking at the balancer and pointer. Ive tried this several times and no luck. Please someone shed some light on this for me. Thanks

Well, lets start simple, how exactly are you comfirming the #1 cylinder is at TDC by looking at the balancer?

Pull the number 1 plug, crank motor with remote starter, hold finger over spark plug hole (not in it) and when the air forces your finger off from the piston coming, should be on compression stroke, look at the balancer and see where you are at Stab the dizzy in with #1 pointed 1-2 o clock afterwards.

Alternate method, pull driver side valve cover watch rocker arms till intake is fully open and started to close on #1

Alternate method #3, backfired out the exhaust, so you are little too far advanced and firing after the exhaust valve opens, turn dizzy to retard timing and crank again, does it work? Turn dizzy and crank again? does it work, Turn dizzy and crank again....

#1 cylinder at the top of the bore (ie Top Dead Center TDC)
both valves closed, but with the intake having just closed.
note where the rotor is pointing
that is where #1 plug wire goes.

#1 cylinder is the forward most cylinder on the passenger side

I never look at the numbers on my plug wires when I put them on the car
If you look at mine, 4 goes to 8 and 8 goes to 4 ect....just make sure the #1 plug goes to the #1 spot on the dizzy....the number on the wire doesn't matter.

True as long as you have them in the right order, going to the right plugs in the right direction of rotation, you can have #1 anywhere really. To make it easier on someone else you could always put #1 back in the same spot where the 1 is on the cap. At least Fords have the distributor in the front, my Pontiacs have it in the back.

Anyway. when I build an engine, before I install it, I will have #1 cylinder on TDC, then put the distributor in. I remove the cap from the rear so the firewall doesnt break it, or on Fords just leave it on there with the wires in a loom. Then I can hook up the headers, install the plugs, and put the wires on. That way I know the engine is timed right.

ok, when i got it to TDC on the 5yth cylinder, the dizzy pointed to the first, so the dizzy was off, i took the old cam out when tdc was on the 5th and put it in on the 5th, so now i need to get real tdc on the 1st i spose and get the dizzy pointed the correct way

Or you could move the wires and put them on in the right order. up to you really, it will run either way as long as #1 wire goes to #1 plug and so forth.
