Default 66 289 Coupe Rear End

I need to rebuild or replace my rear end. What are some good donor vehicles to look for?

Thanks, Dan

I would guess it's an 8", what's wrong with it?

It needs new bearings, seals. I know that I want be able to install new ring and pinion but how hard is it to replace bearings and seals? I really want to chang the ratio for a little more grunt but nothing to drastic.

I'll assume it's an 8". To replace the seals is a fairly easy and inexpensive process. The axle bearings are also easy and relatively cheap. When you get into the differential, it gets a bit more complicated. The carrier bearings and pinion bearings are more costly and difficult to replace. Changing the pinion and carrier bearings requires setting up the diff. from scratch. The pinion depth and carrier backlash need to be set up using a dial indicator. It's not something you would want to do at home unless you are very experienced. 8" center sections are getting very hard to find in junk yards. IIRC, they stopped using them in the mid seventies. Used and rebuilt center sections do show up on Ebay but they are usually few and far between. Also, shipping can be expensive. Now is the time to consider a posi if you don't have one. Sorry for the long winded reply but it's not a real simple subject.

Thanks, 69

I think I'll replace the axle bearings and seals for now and start planning a center section upgrade for later.
