That three speed should be tough enough. The last I-6 we built up, we put the shifter on the floor (three on the tree boyeeee) and the only thing I checked was the gears to make sure they weren't worn. Get this, new pressure plate and clutch. The car had clocked over 200,000 miles already and I'm pretty dang sure the tranny was original.
That was in the early 80's on a Maverick that we made look like a Grabber for my then wife. Apparently, it's still kicking around in the family tree somewhere as a hand me down.

It really depends ont he amount of power you want to get and the amount of money you have. Either way, start off with a good rebuild. Then, funds allowed, get the above-listed head, and turbo it. I plan on turboing my '66 inline within a few years. Does anyone know how strong the 3 spd is?

Supercharging won't give a sleeper affect from the blower whistle. A turbo you'd be smart to run an intercooler and that would be visible so folks would know it's boosted(if they knew to look, but many wouldn't expect it) and nitrous would be the cheapest and most sleeper way to go. Turbo would be very good on a I6 though, but I hope you're rich

IDK for sure, but it seems weak to me,,, while I am sure it will last for years and years behind the stock 6, if you turbo it I wouldn't give it long to live.....
