I though fan shrouds were justed added to improve cooling.

Indeed. The are a guide for the air flow to reach the engine in a more optimal way and thus provide a little better cooling.

It wouldn't have been original on a non-a/c car, but it definitely wouldn't hurt things to have it in there.

Make sure that when you order it, you dont forget to add a fan shroud installation kit.
I forgot to order mine and only received my fan shroud. Pretty dissapointing when living over the ocean and having to wait for parts for 2 months.

first hand, I put the fan shroud on my 66 and made a major diff, added the four core and i can easily drive any 100 degree day and sit at a stop light without a bit of concern. that shroud is an absolute necessity if your in a hot climate.

If you have an I6 motor understand the shroud is not square and will need modifying of the brackets to mount to radiator or support,, I just bought/install one for a 66 200 ci engine and found that the shroud is not "square" as it doesn't bolt to the mounting brackets,,,in other words if you gotta 289,,,you can probably buy a shroud and mount kit ( the brackets) and it'll work outta the box,,as far as helping,,,DO IT! everyhelps

fan shrouds will also keep you from slicing your finger or hand off too. im upgrading to an elctric fan so i dont need one.

Heh, I still managed to put my thumb into my clutch fan while yanking off my vacuum advance. I think the only reason I didn't breakthe knuckleis because it's a clutch fan and not solid...
