if you can afford the car you can afford the gas. im 24 my first car was a 65 impala ss big block with a 4 speed i got 8mpg but it was a nice 8mpg. gas prices are always gonna go up might as well get use to it now.if you use a fuel injected 302 with a overdrive and a 3.55 gear rear end and your easy on it you might see 20mpg on the highway.

As said before, swapping the engine will eat up any savings afforded by the smaller engine. There are fuel economy cams and carbs available for the 302, and alight touch on the throttle goes a long way in saving fuel.

I wish we would just conquer Iraq already, call it New Ameriqa, and bring back the glory days of $0.99 gallons of gas. [sm=americanasmiley.gif]
Then we could all drive Cobra Jets every time we had to pick up a gallon of milk or pick up the kids from school. Wouldnt that be nice?

Hey, I'm just kidding here. Take a joke!

But I am confused: What exactly IS a "light touch" on the throttle. I have never heard of that before.[sm=dontgetit.gif]

Thing is, I'm 18. And it's going to be my first car, so money is an issue here... Petrol for a 5.0 L is expensiv... That's why for a couple of years I'd like a smaller engine, and then later on put the 5.0 L back in. So what I was wondering was what kind of engine could I put in ? Any Ford engine 3.0L would do ? or should I use a specific type of engine....

Thanks again
Where is Aus are you? Good to see another Aussie on here.
Ok grab the Stang and drop in a 4.1 from a falcon something like XD, XE, XF with the cross flow head, and get the trans with it. Given that the stang is considerably lighter than the falcons, your fuel consuption will be stubstantially better than the donor car, and willbe pretty quick. You should be able to pick one up really cheap, and its a good learning experience changing it over. Depending on where you are, the P Plate laws won't let you have that V8 for three years, so you can do some work to it while its on the stand.
On the negative side, stangs in Aus are A LOT more valuable than in the States, and are worth the effort for theives. When I was 18, I drove everywhere, and left my car anywhere that I might be having a drink. You just cant do that with a stang.
I know when I was 18, I would have loved one, but apart from not having the cash, it would not have been practical.
Cheers.
