Default How to tell engine is original?

I have a 69 Mustang Coupe with an inline 6 4.1L 250CI. Now, the vin number says that's the engine it came with, but where are the matching numbers or whatever to tell me if it's the original from 1969?

What they mean by matching numbers in a car this old, is that the vin for the car and the engine have the same date code,, so they were built at the same time.. I dont think you can actually tell with most classics if the car actuallycame with the exact engine that is in the bay, only that its the correct year block..At least thats what I have gathered..

You may fine the last 6 numbers of the vin stamped in the block and maybe even the tranny case. Look for them at the rear of the engine block. Otherwise, the date codes also will have to match as to the time of the build (head, carb, etc). Hope that helps.

you'll have to pull the date code off the block and reference it

to have a "matching" engine i've been told the build date for the engine (found if you decode the stamped numbers) is around 2-3 months before the build date of the car. however, usually if it is the right year block it is considered matching i believe

I think thats right-so if a date code on an engine says "december of 66" it probably ended up in a 67 mustang-the engines pre date the cars by 2 to 3 months scott
