Transmission fluid check

Transmission fluid check
What is the proper way to check the transmission fluid level? - I know the engine is supposed to be hot - but, how long do you have to let it run? - also, do you shut the engine off or check it as the engine is running? - I'm getting conflicting ideas about this - so I figured I go to the source! - this is for a 66/289 C4 transmission.

RE: Transmission fluid check
I pull out and clean the stick first, start the car in park with the e-brake set, let warm up, then check when its at operating tempature. This seems to give the most accurate reading. Add small amounts of fluid such as a half pint to achieve the proper level, don't overfill, than replace the stick and your done. Also its a good thim to check for discoloration and a burnt smell of the fluid as this could be a goodindication to have the tranny flushed and fluid changed.

RE: Transmission fluid check
Thanks! - with the engine hot and running I get a minimal reading on the stick - when I shut the engine off I get a full reading - that is what was confusing me - so if I have a minimal reading with a running hot enginethen I assume I have to add as you said.
Thanks again
