agressive cams

agressive cams
I bought a 270h magnum comp cam and heard it on some cars here on the internet, and I kind of think it has a weak sound. I was thinking of getting a more agressive cam, and it says I will have to upgrade the stall converter. Will I have to upgrade anything else in the engine when it comes to pistons or other engine parts?

RE: agressive cams
Sound with cams doesn't mean jack. I've heard aggressive sounding cars that are slow, and weak sauce sounding cars that haul ***. And going to a bigger cam is almost a waste without heads/intake etc etc etc. All you get is worse mileage and less bottom end torque. You'd prolly need valve springs at least to match a larger cam, and depending on what pistons you have, and what valves and the cam, you may need notched pistons if you don't have clearance.

RE: agressive cams
Comp Cams tends to grind their cams to make good top end power without sacrificing too much idle, giving you a very broad, streetable power band, unlike Isky where their cams have a LOT of valve overlap giving you more peak power at a higher rpm, but a really nasty idle and poor driveability.
The Magnum 270H is no slouch of a cam, especially in a mostly stock 289/302. It's only a small step under the 280H I have in my 331 which is an absolutely blast to drive. Honestly, I'm not sure I'd trust stock valve springs to hold against the lift and rpm that cam is designed to run at. I probably wouldn't trust the stock rod bolts that far either. They might be ok, they might not, but you don't want to see what happens if they don't. Plus, you really do need gears and a torque converter to make it reasonably streetable.
If you're looking for a stock upgrade, I'd probably recommend the HE 268H. It'll be much more streetable with the stock gears and I wouldn't worry too much about springs or bottom end upgrades with it. There's also a hydraulic version of the 289 hi-po cam available (I know Glazier's sells it) that I've been told runs very well.

RE: agressive cams
Comp makes a few hydraulic versions of the HiPo cam as well. They're not exact grinds, but they have similar sound and rpm range, but make better power and drive a bit better. A mix of traditional and modern.

RE: agressive cams
I already put the 351w in a 65 stang with a 650 edelbrock carb, performer intake, flowmaster 40s exhaust, shorty headers, and soon afr heads will be coming, so I want a good agressive cam that willmake my neighbors mad. If the 270h will do that I will install that cam, but if I can go bigger for more performance and sound I want to go this route.
