Cold air intake system?

Cold air intake system?
Any ideas on how to build a sucessful cold air intake for a classic? where to put it and such. thought it might be a cool cheap project to do for some extra hp gain and a cool restomod look under the hood chromed out. Not sure what i could use for the box, but you can get the tubing and filter and autoparts stores.

Not sure if a CAI will make very much of a difference on a classic. I have a subaru with a turbo that will gain about 13 hp with one, but thats because I would also remove a crapload of worthless silencer pipes. If you are looking for a noticeable gain, then you prolly wont get one, but if you are looking for a cool project to be unique, then go for it. "Cold air intake"s on new cars technically mean that they should be low in the engine compartment, usually in the front corner of the engine bay. "short ram" intakes are prolly easier and cheaper to pipe, but they wont get as cold of air. Not sure on the '70 but if you can find a place that would have cool air, that would be a good place for the air cleaner part of the intake to go.
One of the most challenging parts of creating your own intake is the "carb hat" to seal the carb to the intake. You will have a hard time making a good one, and I dont know how much a new one costs.
As far as the heat shield (box) goes, you dont even need one if you dont want. If you do want one, then I would just custom make and bend it out of sheet metal. There was a thread on here a day ago or so that had pics that angliagasser took of his cold air box.

hm ok. yeah it would def add to the restomod look but i hear on new cars you get around 15extra horses so like your saying i wonder if the carburated would be that much of a gain

Well the main reason for the gain in new cars is because you are removing the intake silencer. That is pretty much a huge box and mess of tubes that is inside the fender. It makes the intake quieter, but it would be like trying to breathe through a full length garden hose. I totally agree that it would look good, and I would go for it. Just dont really expect much in terms of power.

Either a functional sealed scoop or a reverse cowl induction hood, again with the carb sealed/isolated from the engine compartment. With a carb'd car you're sucking in hot air coming right out of the radiator, so an outside air source makes a dramatic difference. Even with my car poorly tuned I picked up about 1.5mph at the strip in WARMER weather just by putting a sealed scoop on. The more power you make, the bigger the temp matters. Rule of thumb is ever 10deg F drop in temp = 1% power increase.

so it would be benificial then. i was thinking about droping the tube and cleaner down away from all that heat towards the ground. would it be better to run it closer to the grille?
