For what its worth, I've had my 66 off the clock (140+) it felt a little light at about 120, but seemed to settle down after that. I guess my speedo could be a little out, but I have done a basic calibration and it seems as accurate as my new Falcon.
Its had a mild rebuild and still had the 2.79 gears with C4.

Now before anyone jumps up and down. It was a public road, but its called the Nullabor hwy in Australia. basicallly a 4000km long streach of straight raod. You can travel on it for hours without ever seeing anyone.

5500 RPM, 2.8 rear, 1:1, 26 inch tall tire gives 'theoritical' speed of 151 MPH (doesn't take into account wind drag)

Well, some of the comments and other peoples experiences are interesting. It seems that more than one person has experienced, or known of a 140+ mph Mustang. My appologies to the people i reacted negatively to but it's sometimes difficult reading that i don't know the difference between KPH & MPH and " No Way could it do 140+ " It's not that i can't accept criticism,my objective here was to find out what could have made it do what it did, not ask if it was possible. I drove it, i got the tickets in it, the cops seemed to have my speed down pretty spot on although after that first 140+ on a new stretch of (M69) motorway ,with few cars on it at that time, i never tried the top speed again.I raced others in it. It was never beaten. I'm willing to accept that it may have been off somewhat on the speedometer but unless that was common on Mustangs of the early 70's then that must have been somewhat minimal . I owned the car for 2 years in the late 70's and the car was very well known in the city of Leicester in England. Not only did it go so well but the sound was fantastic. Nobody disputed it's power and speed and at the time i thought it normal until it showed much more power top and bottom end than another 71 Mach 1. My thoughts over the years were that maybe it was a Boss, maybe a nice cam, maybe someone got inside it and did a job on it who knows! The local dealer who ordered the headers was shocked when they didn't fit but i gave him the rpm as well as the speed at the time and he said they matched. Anyway, maybe we'll never know for sure, but it was quite a beast and i thrashed it to death over those 2 years.
Thanks again for your comments.
