1966 radio question.

The AM radio cars had the speaker in the dash. I think the AM/FM radio cars got speakers in the doors as well. For what it is worth, you can get original radios on ebay and either have them restored or buy them already restored. I did that for my '69 for $200. I think it is pretty sweet! Who needs CDs in a classic and iPods with a little FM modulator work great.

The response by straw1628 (not slamming you) is pretty typical on this site, but .....
A radio came in my '66 when I bought it. I pulled it out last night and hooked it up and it worked great, well as well as I could tell as the speakers I hooked up were crappy. Amazingly enough it is a Custom Autosound and the date on the sticker indicates it was made in 1984. Looks like hell but still works fine.
I'll likely buy a USA 66 when mine hits the road.

Texas,
Thats great if it worked for you. We hooked this thing up with a sweet amp, new in dash speakers (pioneers from npd) and sweet 6x9's. All fed with heavy cable and quality connections. After the second new radio failed, I cant have anything good to say about them. Good luck with yours though, I really hope it works because they look sweet.

I got the USA-66 for Christmas and installed it a few days later. I looks and works great so far. I realize its only a month but the build quality and looks are impressive. It fired right up and sounds much better than the factory AM it replaced. I'm still waiting on the backordered MP3 player attachment. CJ says a week or more yet......

I have been planning on buying the USA -66 whenever I get the time / parts money.
Right now, the radio I have works fine and there are more pressing things that I want to spend the money on.
As to the original question....from what I can tell out of the factory my '66 coupe had the two small speakers in the center of the dash under a grill.
It now has some 5 x 7's (or 6 x 9's not sure) in the rear package tray but I have no idea if they were added later or not. My guess is they were an after market add sometime in the last 40 some odd years. The current speakers back there that are about to be replaced this weekend and for certain not from the factory.

Originally my 66 was equipped with an AM radio and a single 4X10 speaker in the dash. It did not have any speakers in the package tray from the factory. I think you could get 5X7s in the package tray as an option. The Pony interior option had speakers in the doors as well.
