Exclamation Brake Lights Help

Hi,

I just recently purchased a 1966 project 'Stang. Everything seemed to work find electricly when I first got the car. But now the car is starting to show some issues.

Well first thing I need help with is my brake lights. When I press on the brakes the lights to my instrument cluster randomly shut off which in turn shuts of my brake lights but my headlights remain on?

I don't know if it is the break switch but I don't think it is that, seeing as how the cluster's lights shut off. I have checked the fuses and they all are ok. I should also mention that when I do press the brakes, sometimes the lights on the cluster will not shut off all the way but sometimes they will just dim (like pressing the brakes draws to much current?)

Please any help to guide me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The only thing your brake lights and instrument cluster have in common is the headlight switch. May be time to replace it.

I would look at the ground for the lights in the trunk area. Then, any of the connectors that the lights run through. like the back of the dash.

Maybe some inept electrical guy was under there and messed up ?

Blue/red stripe wire is for dash lighting.

Look under the dash and secure all blue/red stripe wire from others

The headlight switch is the start of the circuit

I just bought a new headlight switch and installed it, now it works like it should and my gauges are now actually brighter.

Thanks JamesW.

Where did you get your headlight switch? How much was it? I think I may replace mine. That might fix my brake lights.

I picked it up from my local schuck's. It was $20.99. Is your car a '66? I ran into a little snag (if you can even call it that) The '66 has two different headlight switches, one with markings and one without. Of course mine had markings, but I went with the one without markings first because it was cheaper. But the one without markings did not fit my pull **** and was to short to mount with my old bezel nut.

I hope this quick fix works for you as well.

Oh, would anyone know what a good exhaust upgrade would be. I'm looking to do a full upgrade from top to bottom. The car currently has a 200 i6, I would like to later to do an engine swap as well so I would like the exhaust system to be able to handle the new engine as well. Well ok here's a list of what I want to do to the car any help would be appreciated.

-engine upgrade/swap
-drum brakes convert to disk brakes
-exhaust system

If anyone could provide info on cost and ways to cut cost on these upgrades would be great.

Thanks in advance.
