Transmission leak

Transmission leak
My 65 mustang has a transmission leak at the front we think between where the engine and transmission meet. about 3 oz a day. Do transmission sealers work without hurting the transmission? has anyone used these products or does it need a rebuild?

I was told not to use a liquid sealer because it could clog up the filters and ruin the tranny. This came from my brother in law who was a service writer for years and knows more than I ever will.
My leak problem which sounds just like yours was my rear main seal had dry rotted due to excessive periods of not being driven.
I took it to the local shop after the tranny started slipping real bad. They rebuilt the tranny, replaced the rear main seal and a few other things they found. Total cost about $1800. The tranny rebuilt was I think $1100.
Before anyone tells me how badly I got ripped off:
1) Its a local shop I have used before, very well regarded in Balt
2) There was not a chance in hell I could have done it myself

Thanks for the reply. My trans has the oringial 48K and shifts fine. If only replaced the seals and did not have a total rebuild what would be a good price for labor and parts? Would this be a hard job to do if I wanted to do it myself?

changing the seal is easy, the hard part is removing the tranny so you can get to the seal to change it. Its not going to be a cheap fix to hire out because of the time involved to remove and install the transmission. If you did it yourself it would be cheap though but time consuming.

Before you spend a ton of money on a rebuild, check these out.
