Car wants to start on its own
Greetings,
It seems I have a slight electrical issue, I recently switched out my alternator (don't know if this has anything to do with it) and I went to start my car, after it turned over and started I noticed that the starter kept on turning over, I then managed to get the car to stop (not easy when it wants to keep starting). Now whenever I try to connect the battery it instantly tries turning over, and yes the ignition is in the off position. The car is a 71 coupe with a 351c.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Ryan

maybe your starter solenoid has gone bad? but I think when that happens it just doesn't start at all....
check your batter cables too, shorting out or anything?
this seems like a bizarre scenario, not sure what it could be.

it freaked me out though because it sounded like something was wrong with the motor and the rpms kept jumping (from the starter) then when I tried to turn it off it just kept going, then I pulled the coil wire and then engine stopped but kept turning over, thats when i realized it was the starter still going.

ouch, well be sure to lube up at that ignition and be sure it doesn't rotate in the column. You might want to take off your starter because it might have been damaged if it was still turning over while the engine was running. Just a thought, but hopefully it's fine

Starter relays can and do fail closed too. So your initial comment was a good one. a quick way to determine if its the relay or the Ign switch circuit is to pull the wire off of the relay's "S" terminal. if it stops cranking, its in the switch circuit.

That's what happened to me, failed closed, I turned the ignition off, jumped out and the solenoid a quick rap with a screw driver handle and it stopped. Pulled it out and replaced it....no problems since then. Fortunately, I had that happen to me once in a 67 Cougar that I used to own, a quick "memory recall" had me on the right track. But boy was I ever hoping that's what it was - LOL!
