Yes I know it should be but when it does it doesnt line up correctly. They are original. The motor mounts are too.
Could something else be causing the problem?

If they are both original then I don't see how they won't go back together. Did it line up correctly before the motor was pulled out? The only thing I can think if is that maybe it was in an accident and one of the shock towers is out of alignment. Could that be?

Having never assembled stock Ford motor mounts so I don't SPECIFFICLY understand the problem, and I don't really get the picture,,,, so it might be way off.....

but... MAYBE by leaving everything LOOSE you can make alignment get it together and then tighten it all up??

My mounts don't rest on the frame brackets either. There is some space between the uppers and lowers. I have to have the engine pulled up a bit to line up the bolt holes and they're stock mounts.

Oh Vine your mounts don't sit all the way on the brackets either? Any issues?
Also for the through bolt would a grade 8 bolt work or does it have to be a steel through bolt? It is only a 302, which really is not that heavy.
and to tx65 thanks you were a big help for sticking with my stupid thread .
JMD sorry for the bad picture I was not sure what everyone wanted me to take a photo of so I just photographed the gap between the motor mount and frame bracket.

Looks like exactly what I'd expect to see when mixing the wrong insulators with the brackets.

hmm. I see. I mean when I pulled the engine out originally all I did was take out the through bolts and hoist her out. So its the exact same everything as when I pulled it out. I did have the engine at a machine shop for some work though. Possible they replaced with wrong mounts?
2+2 do you think I should buy a new set of mounts? Good to see your from PA. Where about?

I can't tell if your pic is good or bad,

ALL of my SBF experience has involved swapping engines, I have never even SEEN a stock style mount...

I have used mounts similar to this picture on three occasions though...

If you are going to buy new I recommend them,,,, BUT

If the mounts came off they damn well should go back. Make sure you did not mix anything up side to side... and I still say you should loosen everything up align and tighten back up...

loosen everything? what would that include? I do not even have anything bolted in yet.
I am pretty sure those are the stock motor mounts but I could be wrong I guess.

I agree with the trying to install while everything is loose. This would mean the bolts on the motor mount insulators and the bolts on the frame brackets. This may allow you to get things into position better.
