White smoke under hood after few minutes of idle
We're still working on getting this exhaust manifold off the car (that has two broken bolts).
After we degreased the engine about a week ago, we saw white smoke coming from the exhaust manifold (its an inline 6 with 119k miles) and thought it was just steam from hosing down the engine. Shortly thereafter, we heard a clunking noise from the front of the engine and we believe it was the water pump.
So we have ordered a new pump and manifold, they should be here sometime this week.
~~~~~ I'm having second guesses
I went to start the car today to heat up the manifold and hopefully make the bolts easier to remove. I could see white smoke coming from the tailpipe and after about two minutes or so, it began smoking white in the engine compartment. It was really smelly, different from the exhaust it seemed.
I also noticed the occasional drip of liquid out of the tailpipe.
Could this be the water pump causing this?
The other possibilities I can think of is that since the manifold has some bolts out right now that it is leaking (it has a leak anyways, that is why we are replacing it. But why wouldn't it start smoking there immediately?).
Or since I sprayed some Kroil (penetrating oil) on the bolts, it is burning off. But I didn't put Kroil on it when it was smoking the same way after we degreased it.
I think you're getting paranoid. When you degreased the engine all the crap probably ran on to the exhaust manifold and that's what burned off. The other alternative is its blowby coming out of the valve cover breather. I vote for Number one.
Water coming out of the exhaust is perfectly normal. The chief byproduct of combustion is H2O. You don't see it when the car's warmed up because the hot pipes keep it in vapor form.
