Default Please help me diagnose this problem

Several days ago all of a sudden my car started hesitating pretty bad upon acceleration at lower rpm. Once I hit what I assume would be about 3.5k rpm (i don't have a tach) it smooths out and there's no hesitation. i took the air filter off and fiddled with the carb a bit, just pressing down on the lever that rotates the flap inside the carb (i sincerely apologize for my lack of terminology, this is my first carborated engine) and after that the hesitation went away ALMOST completely. My guess is that some part of the carb was stuck. Anyway, like I said, it almost went away completely but I'm still having minor hesitation problems at lower rpm. I also noticed today that when starting to accelerate from a stop (lower rpm of course) I've heard what sounds like a loud blast of air really quick and loud (loud enough for me to hear it from inside the car over the sound of the engine and exhaust). You can replicate the sound by saying "pssshhhhtt". It doesn't happen every time , only twice so far today. What the heck is going on? Like I said, this is my first car that isn't fuel injected so I'm really at a loss here on what might be the problem. Any help you guys could provide would be greatly appreciated!

which flap? the top one you can see with aircleaner off, or the lower one that you can only see when looking down the carb and top one open.
If you are talking about the upper one (the choke butterfly), then you might have a problem with the choke itself. when the engine is warm the top butterfly needs to be fully open. if it's closed i'll give you problems.

for the p[shhhht sound i don't know. do you have power assisted brakes? not that they make a sound (vacuum) when you drive off (let off the brakes). you sure it's from engine?

any other info will help

Well, after closer inspection it ended up being the spark plug wires. 2 of them were completely off of their plugs (which would explain what happened when i heard the loud quick "pshhhht" noise. 3 others were just barely on the plugs. put them all back snug and it runs like a new car :-)
