Unless you are racing the car, 2" will be fine. 2.25", if you plan occasional club stuff. I know others will recommend 2.5", even 3" stuff from a Peterbilt, but it's pretty much just current fashion.

Yeah I was thinking 2.25 or MAYBE 2.5 but 2.5 is pushing it!

The H-Pipe is just easier on a 65-66 Mustang and it's a lot cheaper. It'll take the muffler shop 2 seconds to just weld one in for you.
The difference between the two are an H-Pipe gives you more torque where the X-Pipe gives you more HP. And the sound is a little different. H-Pipe is louder than an X-Pipe.
The bottom line is to make sure you connect both sides of the exhaust system.

I would at least go with 2.25". If you plan on future mods then you can go 2.50", but that is tops. It's gets tight under the 65-66 Mustang, so 2.50" would be the limit.

I'd go with 2.25". Did, actually, on my daughter's '66 with a 4-barrel mid-80's 302/5.0. It's more than enough for a mild to moderate street motor.

To really use 2.5", you need either about 350 cubic inches or an extremely serious build. I'm running 2.5" with sort of an X-pipe arrangement in the 355 EFI Malibu.

The H will retain the V8 rumble, which more people seem to prefer. An X gives up most of the rumble and gives you more of a smooth, higher pitched snarl.

I would condsider the stock duals. It you want it louder then maybe go with the Arvinode K code exhaust.

I prefer H pipe over X pipe. I have H on mine.

What about HiPo manifolds instead of headers? Thats a great choice on a stock or mild motor.

I'm running 2.5 inch exhaust, and would have been fine with 2.25 inch pipe.

I don't know what it is completely opposed to manifolds at the moment. Definitely going to go with some headers.
