I see what your saying.....It really gets to be a touchy situation for somebody that wants to repair their own car in their own shop or garage.

Now when somebody buys another body for parts,where does it become a new car?

I think as long as honesty is maintained we should not have any problems.

This link will explain much...


Its a PDF from the NHTSA that states a vehicle undergoing a repair or restoration can have the numbers replaced or re-stamped. You are not altering the numbers assigned to this car, this is not about the physical numbers that you can cut out and hold in your hand, its about the identity of the car in question.

You cannot transfer assigned or stamped numbers from one car to another.

That is the standard laws but some states can set their own laws about vins.Michigan had a lot of old jeeps built from the aftermarket alum bodies and new frames with a true jeep vin.They changed their laws on vins my cousin lives up there he bought a rusty camaro to restore he had to repair around the vin when he went to license it he was told he couldn't take the vin off and put it back on and the state gave him a vin which made the car worth nothing now.
