289 Carburetor Recommendations

Default 289 Carburetor Recommendations

Hi-

Any recommendations for a stock 289 V8, automatic transmission? I'm wanting to hop it up a little in the future, nothing crazy just a little more performance, but right now I want to just make a reasonable choice for a carb and be done with it.

The shop's choice is a Holley 670 cfm double pumper.

My buddy, who is very knowledgeable, chose a Holley 600 cfm single inlet.

Is there a big difference between these two, or a clear better choice?

I have a 600cfm Edelbrock with the Edlebrock intake made a big difference

Which intake? I'm thinking of possibly replacing my intake and carb at the same time. Was it packaged with the carb? Depends on the $$$. Mainly want to get the Mustang up and running again.

Go with a Wieand 8124 intake with an Edelbrock 1406 600cfm. After a lot of SEARCH function and reading that is what I am doing with my stock 289 auto.

and the shop that suggested a 670 doesnt know fords. that is way too much carb for a 289 even with a cam.

Go elswhere, IMHO.

A lot of shops are chevy born, and chevy motors need lots of carb.

I agree 670 is huge for a 289.

Edelbrock sells manifold/intake combos pretty reasonably. You could probably find a used performer intake for cheap. Performer RPM is a little better for performance.

a 600cfm carb out of the box is still going to be a little big for a pretty stock 289. If you're going to be running the engine as it is for awhile then you'll probably want to get a tuning kit for it as well so you can size things down a little if you want optimum performance out of it.

Agree. I have the Edlelbrock 600 with matching Performer intake on my 289 auto. Works very well!

its the performer intake had it laying around in the garage for a while. mines a stock 289 auto I've added headers & new ingnition runs great

The 670 is WAY too big for a stock engine. WAY. Also, a double-pumper is not appropriate for an auto trans setup. The secondary pump is useful for getting the enine back to power when shifting the manual trans.

For your purpose, I'd use a 500 cfm Edelbrock. Great throttle response and good economy. Last summer I detailed a 61 Corvette 283 for a guy, but he wanted a polished aluminum intake for some extra bling. Well, the stock carb wouldn't work on it, so I used a 500 cfm Edelbrock. Car runs fantastic. Bigger is not always better. With carbs, bigger is usually worse.

I can't believe 2+2 didn't suggest Ford's 4100. It's a fine carburetor which can be reasonably had, comes in two sizes and was stock on many a 289.
