Default C6 price and timing light question

Everything I do on my mustang I have learned from either this forum or a book. So I hate asking questions that I know are simple to you guys. I found a 72 C6 tranny for $85 ran 5 years ago and has been setting out side since it was pulled from the car on a crate with a tarp on it. Good price? might take it to a shop to get it benched tested and then rebuild it myself or just replace all the gaskets and rings. Is it hard to do just reading a book or watching a video. Mechanically I would say I am pretty good. I rebuilt my 289 by a book and video.
Next question... I am getting a timing light but not sure what is a good one for my 289. does the digital ones read RPMs and that's it? Also can it be used to set my RPMs on my car.
The C6 might get hooked up to my 289 I have a C4 in it now. Both are automatics

you want an advanced timing light that allows you to advance/retard the timing. This will permit you to check and modify your distributor advance down the road, and check your total advance, as well as routine timing. Timing is made up of initial, advanced, and total advance. This light will allow you to look at all setting. Takes a little understanding and math, but overall, fairly simple to use, Craftsman is under $100. As for the tranny, shoot, offer $50, its a great learning tool. stay away from the harborfreight model. Its one of those tools where you want to spend a little money for a better unit.

Make sure it is a small block C6 before you spend your money.

Be advised that you will need to make your own transmission mount as there was no small block C6 transmission available for the 67's and the C4 mounts don't work.

My brother made the mount for my setup back when the car was his over 20 years ago out of 2" angle iron and we haven't given it another thought.

If it came off another small block windsor then you're good to go. It'll bolt up.
