Default Timing Light

I just went to a yard sale today and got me a timing light for 4 euros (its a little more than 4 dollar). So it was a bargain if it works.
I want to test if it works but before i do i want to ask here if i need to connect te spark plug wire also to test the gun? I never used such a tool so i don't know.
Tell me how do i test it please ?

Pffttttt. I almost spewed beer on my monitor. 4 bux huh? Wow, you may gotten a real bargain. Anyhoo, take it out to the engine, and hook up the red lead to the positive side of your battery, and the black lead up to the negative side of the battery. The other lead goes to the number 1 plug wire/spark plug. Most come with a spring looking thing that will allow you to hook up that third wire to the spark plug and wire. Turn on the engine, and point the timing light to the timing mark. Does it blink and give you a reading?

michael, make sure you put the plug wire connector facing the right way. normally it's marked "this side towards plug" or in another language maybe. if it doesn't work one way, try the other because there is a difference. tzal er int antwerps ni opstaan peis ik, maar heb er ook zo een, vandaar... (just a bit of flemish between two belgians, guys, i just told him that it wouldn't be on there in the local antwerp dialect)

Ok, the time light is of the gun type.

I just want to make sure that it works by the time i need it. I just went out to the stang, hooked it up to the battery but made NO connection to any of the spark plugs.
I did not see any light, not even when i pulled the trigger switch. Is that normal?

The ign of you eng will trigger the strobe in the light. It will not work when the engine is off. Try it on a buddy's car.

actually you can put the number 1 piston to top dead center. Hook up the light, and then turn the distributor. the light should flash when it hits. This guy i was talking to, showed me his home made timing light. Just a sparkplug with a alligator clip clamped to it. He said put the piston on top dead center turn the distributor. When the plug fires, theres your mark.
